There are several new features that are introduced in the Canon Powershot G11 camera, particularly the newly designed 10 megapixel image sensor, with High Sensitivity. With the increased sensitivity and the lower resolution level than the G10 (G10 has a 14 megapixel lens), the images are actually sharper. The slightly lower resolution reduces the noise in the picture. Combine this with the new DIGIC 4 image processor, and the resolution and clarity of the pictures are outstanding, especially for a point and shoot camera.

Another feature of the Powershot G11 is a large LCD display, 2.8 in display, that can be swiveled, allowing you to take pictures at a variety of angles. The G11 is very similar to the G10 in appearance, but perhaps a bit more streamlined. Also similar to the G10, the Canon Powershot G11 offers the Smart AUTO function which automatically selects the appropriate shooting mode for the conditions, from a list of 22 predefined modes. The camera also has RAW and JPEG shooting and recording modes, allowing great flexibility for the professional photographer. Sad to say there that are more dishonest discount camera stores than you’ll find in almost any other business. Some of the popular photography magazines are cram full of ads advertising very low prices. What they don’t tell you is that you won’t ever actually get the camera for that price. Either they will add on $75 in shipping charges or they will be “out of stock” on that model, but they will have a more expensive model available of course. Sometimes they’ll tell you that the advertised camera is plastic in made in Taiwan, but for another $50 you can get the model made in Japan. Sometimes they’ll ship you the wrong item in the hope that it will be too much trouble to send it back. Shop in the ads at the back of magazines based only on the lowest price you see and most of the time you’ll be sorry.

 However, there are reputable discount dealers on the internet. One of which i highly recommend is http://www.manydigitalcamera4u.com.

There is a lot of things you can say about a digital camera, but nobody can say that they are not a lot of fun. Just being able to snap away without worrying about costs of film and see instant results is the greatest thing since the invention of photography. But please do all your friends and family a favor: just because you shoot more pictures, doesn’t mean they want to see all of them so pick out the best and only show those!

Some cameras work with AA size batteries, others come with a rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery and adapter to charge it. Both systems have their merits. You can buy pretty powerful rechargeable AA batteries (2000mA), but still a Lithium-Ion battery specifically designed for your camera is likely to give better performance. If you choose a camera that uses a special battery with it’s own charger, getting a second one is probably the smart thing to do; you will one day forget to charge, stay away from a wall socket too long or take more pictures than anticipated. For other cameras you can get very powerful, but expensive, lithium disposable batteries, if you go away for longer, carrying one of those as backup could be a good idea. Personally, except for the most casual of shooter, I recommend a camera that comes with rechargeable lithium-ions, but be sure to buy a spare (or two) if you do heavy shooting.

The first thing you notice about the Canon SD950 is its appearance and size.The SD950 comes titanium clad with chrome accents, making it not only extremely rugged, but also visually pleasing with its smooth matte silver finish.Add that to its size – The dimensions measure only 1.1 inches deep, 2.4 inches tall, and 3.8 inches across. The camera roughly measures up to be the same size as a deck of cards – Quite small for a compact digital point and shoot that’s loaded with such powerful features.The camera is extraordinarily robust for its paltry 5.8 ounce weight, providing for an excellent handfeel. Have you ever held a camera and gotten that light and tinny sensation, like it could crumble in your hands or shatter when dropped? This is definitely not so with the SD950 – And it’s light enough to fit into a shirt pocket without burden. Additionally, the camera has well placed grooves and ridges for a secure handhold, and the shutter button is intuitively placed (are you reading this Pentax?) where the index finger rests, allowing for one handed shooting with ease. Overall the action and use of the SD950 will suit even the clumsiest hands, both large and small.Clearly, the most important aspect of a digital camera is picture quality and power. This camera has both more thoroughly covered than an OJ Simpson trial(Bad joke, I know)It’s baffling that this tiny camera somehow shares a sensor with its much larger cousin, the digital heavyweight Canon G9, making it the beefiest sensor out of any SD. At a whopping 12.1 megapixels, the clarity and resolution of photos – taken by a simple point and shoot – is unmatched. The photos I took were not only vibrant in color and crystal clear, but had such a high resolution that I could practically print out posters with top notch clarity and detail. This is upgraded from the SD900’s already impressive 10 megapixels. At 12, you can’t really get much higher, nor do you need to. After investing in this camera, I’m going to kick back and rest assured that I won’t need to replace it for a long, long time.As far as shutter speed goes, Canon once again has me impressed, considering the massive resolution of the SD950. Without focus acquired, I averaged .44 seconds. With focus acquired, I shot within .1 seconds. Unless you’re trying to freeze bullets midair, this should be good enough for anyone. 5 shots taken back to back were accomplished within 2.5 seconds. Brilliant, even for fast action sequences.A downside to all this power is its effect on battery power. The advertised battery life is approximately 240 shots – The amount of shots I took in my experience hovered within 10 shots of that level. This is enough for a full day of shooting, a few days of intermittent shooting, or a few weeks of sparse shooting. Although this is disappointing compared to the rest of the SD950’s features, it is still fairly average for cameras in its class, and I found that on a practical level it didn’t really affect me. I’ve never been in any situation, at home or abroad in which I came close to shooting that amount without being able to recharge. If so, I’d probably spend a few bucks on a backup battery. For most use (like an event, vacation, etc) this shouldn’t be anything to worry about.Other notable features:In case you’re wondering where “IS” comes from in the product name, it means Image Stabilization. This is an amazing mechanism inside the camera itself – If you’re shaky with your hands, or in low light conditions, the lens actually counter-gyrates within the camera in order to cancel it out and mitigate any blurriness. Truly a marvel – this has saved whole albums from getting screwed up when shot at night and in other unfavorable conditions.The zoom is better than practically every camera in its class, only getting beat out by cameras that specialize in zooming (but lack in other practical features). The Canon SD950 can hit up to 3.7x optical, with another 4x in digital. Nice.Other features:Digic III Processor (Top notch, pioneered by Canon)Red-eye Correction (No more turning your friends into vampires)Face Detection Technology (Automatically detects, frames, and focuses on faces in group and portrait shots. I love this feature – there’s nothing more awkward than having a group stand in place for an hour while your camera tries to focus!)80-3200 ISO range to suit any shooting conditionShooting modes: Auto, Manual (for more presets, adjustments), Scene (11!) settings for any shooting situation, Movie mode (with time lapse! this is a lot of fun). I was pleasantly surprised at the clarity and definition of this little camera’s films230,000 pixel LCD screen: Provides an excellent preview with virtually 100% image coverage, and 15 brightness settings.Oldschool viewfinder: So glad they provided this! So many digital cameras skip this feature, which is priceless in situations of glaring light, or god forbid an LCD screen outageConclusion:Having researched point and shoot digital cameras extensively, you cannot find a higher quality point and shoot, especially for a price tag that’s shockingly modest for a newly released powerhouse. The Canon SD950 blew away any previous camera I’ve owned, as well as any competitor I researched, with its unparalleled 12 megapixel rating, image quality, and clarity. Given its specifications and my personal experience with it, I can’t help but write out what appears to be a glowingly optimistic review. Kudos to Canon. The built-in lens has a 35mm zoom lens which can be adjusted up to 140 mm. The lens of the camera is autofocus, you will not have to adjust it anymore as required. The focus range is from 18 in to infinity, while the macro focus range is from 0.39 to 18 in (w)/9.8 to 18 in. the focal length of the Canon PowerShot A640 is limited from 7.3 mm to 29.2 mm only.

A camera with a 10.4 mega pixel resolution brings out good quality of pictures. The unit has several images resolutions that you can choose and adjust from time to time. The image resolution of the camera ranges from 640 by 480 up to 3648 by 2736. According to digital camera ratings, these resolutions are already enough to produce good quality images.

Aside from taking pictures, you can also use this camera to record videos. The videos which can be saved are very limited. The video resolutions range is as follows: (320 by 240 (QVGA), 640 by 480 (VGA) and 160 x 1. The video speed is 30 fps and with a maximum length of 60 minutes only. The video works on AVI format. Videos and images can be saved in a SD card, the type of memory card compatible with A640. There are several compression modes that you can use when saving files in the form of JPEG, EXIF 2.2 and DPOF 1. A 128MB memory card can contain 49 images when saved in a high resolution format but it can save up to 1,600 images when saving using low resolutions.

The Canon A640 unit comes with a built in flash type. It can be used as auto flash, with red-eye reduction flash, slow sync and forced functions. The viewfinder is from the optical 2.5” LCD screen with a screen resolution of 115,000 pixel. The interface of the unit is through USB 2.0 while the video interface is video out. It requires 4 AA lithium batteries to power the unit. It can take up to 500 images.

Even if you research and compare digital cameras that have the same type as the Canon A640, you will find that this unit is worth the price that you pay for it.

In common practice, the comparative test aims at distinguishing the advantages of one producer over another within one and the same price category and functional group. That is why models by different producers representing the same section of the market are taken for observation. Canon cameras are usually compared with their group-mates from Panasonic, Sony or Nikon. But we at DigiCamFriends.com have agreed to take another way and get to know what obvious innovations may be found in the Canon PowerShot S5 IS (hereafter, Canon S5) in comparison with the Canon PowerShot S3 IS (hereafter, Canon S3) that used to be extremely popular.

Let’s imagine we know nothing about new features developed by Canon for the new model S5 that appeared after the Canon S3:

Physical view

Canon models of S – series, being different from another Canon PowerShot “subclass” (that is models of A-series), are characterized as “amateurish” but with some skills of “professional”. This is for report or art-report shooting, but not for the motionless photos, something like “a tree and me” type. From this point of view both models have a very handy design.

In fact physical view of the camera has not been changed, except first- the enlarging of the movable screen from 2 to 2.5 inches and second- the replacement of one of the control buttons. And while the latter novelty hardly seems to be pleasant, the first one fits quite natural- it’s become more convenient to take photos with a larger screen.

Optics

The cameras have the same lens construction type with identical settings (the market interpretation of the term construction – the quantity of the optical elements and it’s groups). Unfortunately, there was no information found on the manufacturer’s Web-site mentioning that these lenses are identical; so I won’t insist on theoretical view point, but make a display with some photo examples.

Example 1 : Shots with max. depth of field (the aperture priority mode, the shutter is closed down; Flash is on; ISO80 sensitivity; the white balance – “Flash”). The distance between the objects is about 15-25 cm. Auto focus on the handle of the cup. On the left is a shot taken by the Canon S3, on the right, by the Canon S5.

These cameras are recognized among the majority of digital cameras for equally good color reproduction and quick focusing on the objects, even if they are trying to escape from your camera.

It doesn’t make much sense if we start making a display of numerous examples of similarities between these cameras. We’ll stop making trivial comparisons of their features and proceed to noting peculiar and individual characteristics discovered during the experiments.

The Imperfectness of the Lens

Practical optics has very little in common with the geometrical sums in the physics lessons that students solve while learning about cameras as a kind of equipment. But however accurate the calculations may be, even the most carefully developed ( and rather expensive) model of the lens is not completely perfect. For example, there can be chromatic aberrations, when the objects on the image are colorfully haloed. Test results show that both cameras have the same level of chromatic aberrations. Surprisingly, in spite of the progress of the competitors, Canon hasn’t manage to overcome this problem when developing the Canon S3 into the Canon S5, even after the evolution within internal toolkit. On the whole, in my point of view, the number of drawbacks of cameras for ultra-zoom class is high.

Example 4 : chromatic aberrations are the colourful halos around the bridge footing. This example also displays the difference of the sharpness of the objects in the photo taken by different cameras, but we’ll discuss it later. At the top is the whole shot with the testing

area highlighted. On the left is a shot taken by the Canon S3, on the right, by the Canon S5. For both cameras we set semi-auto “Landscape” mode with completely closed aperture, 12x optical zoom in.

Shooting Close-ups – Macro modes

Macro-shooting is not an easy task for a camera, designed as the “the mater of landscape photography”. The technical characteristics for shooting bugs and spiders are just opposite of those for shooting sun-sets and mountain landscape. There are numerous items that can be

evaluated to identify the macro capacity of the camera. In particular, there is a famous test based upon not simply measuring the distance from the lens surface necessary for focusing, but making a photo of a small object wthin the whole shot. The smaller the object, the higher degree of macro capacity of your camera has.

We agreed to experiment upon the monetary unit of our country – coins of different values.

For both the Canon S3 and the Canon S5, macro-shooting is available in two different modes: “macro” and “super-macro”. We had expected to get the similar results, but it turned out that, with the Canon S5, the borderline between these modes suffers influence of its predecessor. While “macro” mode of the Canon S3 enables you to take a photo of 5 coins, that enlargement is not enough for the Canon S5 for it’s limit is 6 coins (shooting of 5 coins requires “super-macro” mode).

After experimenting at length with “super-macro” mode we managed to take the image of a single coin. By the way, the coin is 15.5 mm in diameter. Unfortunately, this test can’t be characterized as complete. It might be possible to take photos of much smaller objects on the whole screen provided there is extra lighting ( the cover around the lens prevented the addition of more light:in fact the lens was resting on the object; we had to build up a flash reflector, manually-set ISO200 sensitivity, and at last lighten the image with an image editor program.

Example 6: “Super-macro” mode. On the left, a shot taken by the Canon S3, on the right, by the Canon S5. The lack of light forced us to set the sensitivity to a high ISO level, and the bright halo around the coin is nothing but a flash, spread all over the tightly-stretched piece of white paper.

Sensor and ISO speed

Both cameras have sensors of 1/2.5′ size, the number of effective pixels (pixel value) is 6 – 8 megapixels. Nowadays 8 megapixels for that type of sensor seem to be the limit (A greater number is quite possible, though it might be not economically feasible).

An important characteristic of digital camera, referring to its sensor, is ISO speed. The manufacturer gives the ISO speed scale from 80 to 800 for the Canon S3 and up to 1600 for the Canon S5. Let’s experiment to evaluate data in low light condition.

From the examples above we may see that an ISO speed within 80- 200 scale makes good results for both cameras, although the results with the higher ISO speeds are not so clear.

Example 10: ISO400 speed. Same cameras and same conditions as above.

Example 11: ISO800 speed. Same cameras and same conditions as above.

While shooting with ISO400 sensitivity gives equally good results, the setting of ISO800 sensitivity enables the new internal algorithm of noise reduction in the Canon S5 to come into play (Heaven knows how it happens – either via auto or programmed mode). As for ISO1600 sensitivity, it is absolutely useless; even the above mentioned noise reduction mechanism doesn’t cope with the noises. Though the manufacturer doesn’t hold this option back from customers.

Example 12: ISO1600 speed of the Canon S5. The same image patch, as in the previous examples (the shutter speed priority mode, external light; for better observation the marked out areas are enlarged in image editor).

By the way, during the experiments with ISO speed, another peculiar feature of both cameras had been noticed. They manage to operate the white balance mode equally good, except when the white balance mode should be set manually at high ISO speed (800 and 1600). The noises of the sensor seem to appear in the program accepted averaged color, that is white.

It is not a great obstacle to overcome for usually the candlelight is used at such a high ISO speed (the dim light of a table-lamp and dingy street-lamps, for example) and you may choose the appropriate manual setting. Still, it is strange why such an imperfect algorithm inherited from its predecessor didn’t go through any changes.

Focusing on the distant objects

It has already been mentioned (discussing chromatic aberrations) that we get different results when focusing on distant object by Canon S3 and Canon S5. To check the fact we shot a series of landscape images with 12x optical zoom in. The semi-auto “landscape” mode was set to provide completely closed aperture along with the other auto-set characteristics (in other words to realize the greatest possible depth of field). To meet the non-stop character of the experiment, the test shots were taken at once without choosing the object to focus on but as soon as the camera informs that its ready to shoot (as soon as it has focused on). In addition, to avoid different views of nature by the cameras, we set “Spot focus” mode. Let me show you the effect referring to the series of shots of a TV tower.

Example 13: Focusing on distant objects with 12x optical zoom in ( “Landscape” mode, “Spot focus” mode). At the top is the shot of the landscape without enlargement; in the middle- the same landscape with 12x optical zoom in (with highlighted testing area). At the bottom to the left is the image by the Canon S3, at the bottom to the right, the image by the Canon S5 (both shots have been enlarged in an image editor).

The results show the pre-eminence of the Canon S5 working in auto focus mode. Probably, the Canon S3 might have shown not as bad results, if it were used in manual focus mode, but then it would break the conditions of the experiment.

Toolkit

“Sharpness” is available for both cameras, being called “Rezkost” in Russian texts. It attracted most attention among the other settings, because in a way it may be regarded as the equivalent of the internal noise reduction option (it doesn’t reduce the noise but highlight the edges, that make impression of a high-quality shot). To test that no changes had been made within the algorithm, we took a number of shots with 400ISO speed (the noises are already conspicuous, but they do not prevail).

Based upon the examples above, we may say that this algorithm as well didn’t go through great changes: such a “delicate” way of increasing sharpness with a few artifacts left. It seems as though the manufacturer had not intended to update toolkit for a new model.

The algorithms of compression

It’s a pity, but neither of the cameras deals with RAW files (despite the Canon S5 sporting a new feature which is characteristic of a professional camera; that is, the flash hot shoe for external flash); all the image files are saved in JPEG format with various degree of resolution and compression (both are manually set). To compare the internal algorithms of compression we shot 2 series of photos in “Landscape” mode (to provide the best depth of field on the small far details). The center of the shot had been taken for the testing area to eliminate possibly the influence of the imperfect optics; all the changes were made in BMP format in order to make JPEG artifacts more conspicuous, and at the same time, not to add any extra while preparing shots for publishing; all the image patches were enlarged in the end.

The above examples display that the Canon S5 inherits from its predecessor the Canon S3 the visual effect of compression even for the high-quality images. I would recommend either increasing the super- quality of JPEGs (by any possible way) or contribute RAW- format (TIFF/ BMP- any of the formats that compresses without faults); the cameras really suffer from the lack of one!

Features

Among the pleasant innovations for Canon S5, such have been noticed (though not checked):

* extensive work with the same set of batteries (170 shots in stead of 110 – according to the results of the standard test by the manufacturer);

* a hot shoe and sync-contact for external flash.

Summing up

After practical work with both cameras, we at DigiCamFriends.com may conclude that some changes indeed have been made for the new model. This can be observed in such operations as focus on distant objects with high optical zoom or with high ISO speed. These new features helped to correct utter drawbacks found in the Canon S3, in comparison with the success of the similar pairs of cameras by other manufactures. The 8.0-megapixel sensor allows for creative cropping while providing enough detail for large, high-quality prints. A new Safety Zoom takes advantage of the camera’s high resolution to offer extra zoom magnification without affecting image quality–up to 16x zoom when shooting Small size images. Users can also activate the Digital Teleconverter to add extra telephoto reach on all shots, similar to adding a teleconverter lens to the camera.

The 4x optical zoom lens achieves a 35-140mm focal length (35mm equivalent) while allowing the camera to maintain a compact size. Overall this is a great camera for home use and for being on the go. It is bigger than many pocket cameras, but I have found that the swivel screen protects the screen when folded away. My wife and I also like being able to take photos of ourselves in case no one is around to help out. It is also just fun being able to rotate the screen so that people can see how they will look in the photo I am taking. The camera is still small enough to fit into a jacket pocket or a purse. It’s got all the standard features and is very fast. The time to power on and take your first shot is fast so hopefully you won’t miss that shot you wanted when your camera was off. You can flip the camera in a vertical or horizontal position and the photos in review mode rotate to accommodate the position the screen is in.

This camera has an automatic screen cap rather than having the old style caps that are tethered to the body of the camera. This helps when taking your first shot because it is one less thing you have to worry about when turning on the camera. It is also one less thing to lose. I believe this is the best camera in this price range. I paid about $250 from new egg. It was delivered the next day via standard shipping along with an inexpensive 1GB memory card. I recommend at least a 1GB card, which will allow you to take roughly 300 photos at a setting one step below best quality. This still allows you to print a nice 11″ x 17″ with no problem.

The SD990 IS is the successor to the highly rated canon fc 226. Other than a bump up from 12.1 megapixels to 14.7, the lens and housing on this model are very similar to its predecessor’s. While most manufacturers have shifted to wider-angle lenses, Canon gives the SD990 IS the SD950 IS’s 3.7X optical zoom with a focal range of 7.7mm to28.5mm (35mm equivalent: 36mm to 133mm), with corresponding maximum f-stops of f/2.8 and f/5.8. Available in black or silver, the SD990 IS is stylish and comfortable to hold thanks to its ergonomic curves. At 6.6 ounces and 2.45 by 3.81 by 1.10 inches (HWD), though, it is a bit on the chunky side.

Flip the SD990 IS over to find the LCD, viewfinder, and controls (except the power button, jumbo shutter release, and zoom trigger, which are all on top). There’s also a scrolling dial wheel that encircles the four main feature buttons. All the camera’s controls are firm to the touch and comfortable to use. Even on a bright day the LCD delivers. Though a 2.5-inch display seems a bit small these days, this one packs 230,000 pixels to provide clarity, crisp images, punchy colors, and little motion blur. The screen on the SD990 IS is a far cry from the subpar ones you’ll find on the Olympus Stylus 1030SW and Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX37. What’s more, you also have the viewfinder for framing shots.

What really sets the SD990 IS apart are its manual settings. While in manual mode, the camera offers full control over shutter speed and aperture. And it displays a “correct exposure meter” to help you tweak your shots–features typically found only on high-end superzoom and D-SLR models. The scrolling dial allows you to zip quickly through the 45 available shutter speeds. You can also adjust the focus and flash levels when in manual mode. Pros will certainly appreciate this kind of freedom in a point-and-shoot camera.

On the flip side, Canon could have catered more to the needs of amateur users. Though the SD990 IS does feature an Auto mode for default settings of white balance, ISO, flash, and so forth, Canon opted not to include the dead-simple Easy mode found on the entry-level PowerShot A1000 IS. With the A1000’s Easy mode, the only option you’re given is to turn the flash on or off. All the camera’s other buttons are locked, all the quality settings are set to high, and all the other parameters (white balance, ISO, focus) are locked on auto. Easy mode is a great failsafe feature I would have liked to have seen here, but since the SD990 IS isn’t an entry-level model, this isn’t a major gripe.

If you’ve ever owned a Canon before, you’ll notice a slight change in the interface: The icons on the SD990 IS are shaded to create a 3D effect. The interface is simple, straightforward–it’s easy to move around in it quickly–but, again, there’s no guidance for beginners. The Olympus Stylus 1050 SW offers a Guide mode that uses pictures to illustrate different scene modes.

If you’re hoping to sell images over the internet or create high quality images with minimal effort then read on to find out about my experience of the Canon Powershot G9, a powerful camera indeed.

I’d wanted to get a decent camera for some time, but upon visiting a large electrical goods store I found that there was quite simply far more choice than I could have anticipated. It left me feeling a little lost but I kept my aim in mind – acquiring a camera able to take very high quality pictures without too much fuss that I could use to build up a picture library of stock photos – and plodded on.

Whilst high quality was of paramount importance I wasn’t on a limitless budget. Top of the line digital cameras can fetch many thousands of dollars, but I didn’t have that much to spend. So as well as being good quality I was keeping my eye on price too. Now it was down to the cameras to get me interested. With so many choices the one that I chose would need to be able to offer up something special. As I’d been reading up on digital cameras in anticipation of my purchase I’d heard that the Powershot G9 was getting quite a few semi-professional and professional users interested. I’d heard a lot about Canon anyway, and this coupled with the opinions of some pros gave me a good feeling. As such I decided to find out more.

When I asked to take a look at a Powershot G9 the store attendant handed me a compact kind of camera which I found pleasing. The large cameras can be a nuisance to haul around everywhere so I was hoping to get something I could take with me easily. The camera felt robust with a pleasing weightiness that reassured me of its quality. I also liked the cameras visual design which had hints of old-style cameras – the retro stylings were certainly funky.

Having taken in the visible aspects of the G9 I inquired more into its technological features. Featuring a 12.1MP camera and a 6X zoom built-in I was feeling pretty enthused already. Furthermore, the files are stored in raw format which makes for higher quality images, although they do take up a lot of space on a memory card.

The cameras ISO is 400 which meant it could take decent pictures in poor lighting, although when the pictures are viewed at large sizes the quality isn’t perfect which is a slight downside.

However, one of the most important features to me was the camera’s automatic functions. Handling focus, flash, and exposure on its own meant I didn’t have to worry about any complicated controls. This allowed me to focus on the fun of taking pictures rather than worrying about whether I’d managed to get all the settings right. Beyond this the camera had lots of scene modes to cover all eventualities and can even record video. This is a fantastic camera which I’m truly impressed with.

I admit it, I am a Canon girl. I have had several other brands of digital cameras, but I have been happiest with my Canons. I now own a Canon Rebel Digital SLR and several lenses, a Canon Powershot Elph (SD 110), and a Powershot (SD850 IS) Elph, as well as two Panasonics and a Sony.

About a year ago, I bought myself the Powershot (SD850 IS) Elph. It was love at first photo. Not only is this digital camera compact and super easy to use, but the pictures are superb. I also love the ability to take video, which my Canon Rebel doesn’t have. The SD850 IS is lightweight, but not flimsy. It also fits in my small purses and pockets of my jeans, which is nice. And the improvements over my older (but still good) Canon Elph 110 are impressive.

One of my favorite features, along with the ability to take black and white or sepia photos, is the Macro, or close-up function. I have taken hundreds of photos of bees on flowers, dew drops, ants, and shells. Several of them have been blown up and framed as art. This has little to do with my skill and much to do with the impressive quality the Elph brings. To see the veins in a leaf or pollen on the feet of a bee is amazing. I am constantly seeing new things that I would never have noticed with my naked eye. You really have to see it to believe it.

Another thing to mention about the Elph is that it is much more durable than I would have expected. I wear mine on a neck-strap, and sometimes it bangs into things when I bend over or lean to get something. Even after a year of my abuse, the thing is as good as new. It has also been dropped once and rained on twice. I use my Elph for shopping (taking pictures of items and prices so I’ll remember details later), take pictures of online maps instead of printing them out, taking pictures of products I need to pick up at the store, and even as a flashlight one night walking my dog.

I love coming up with new ways to use it. It is also a valuable tool for insurance purposes. Take pictures of valuables, burn them to a disk, and stick them with important documents for an emergency. If there’s a fire, you’ll have proof of ownership. Also, if you receive a package that is damaged, grab your Canon Elph and take shots before you open the package. It’s also great if you are in a fender bender.

My mother, sister, and uncle have all bought the same model after trying mine, and they love it, too. I have personally taken over 12,000 pictures with mine, and it is still going strong. (Yes, I take pictures everyday, and sometimes will take 600 or more at a party or event.) And you can believe the next time I buy another digital camera that it will be a Canon too.

I strongly recommend anyone in the market for a compact digital camera to give the Elph a shot. It is fabulous, and really isn’t too expensive. As I said, you name a brand of camera, I have probably used it. The Canon digital cameras are top quality and the Elph is amazing. And fun! Get your hands on one and see for yourself.
